The Help of Our Saviour

Psalm 36:5-9 (NLT)

Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the ocean depths.
You care for people and animals alike, O Lord.
How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.
You feed them from the abundance of your own house,
letting them drink from your river of delights.
For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.

In this Psalm, God’s faithfulness, justice, and love are contrasted with the sinful hearts of men and women. In spite of our fallen condition, God pours out His love on those who know him.

In contrast to evil people and their wicked plots that end in failure, God is faithful, righteous and just. The good news of Jesus Christ is that God offers His purity as a cure to my evil. When we look to God, what do we see?

1. LOVE WITHOUT LIMIT (v.5)

Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.

God’s love and faithfulness reaches to the heavens. Small things don’t stick up very high but God’s love for us is so great you can’t put an altimeter to it. His love is as vast as the heavens; His faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.

2. SOLID GOODNESS (v.6)

Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the ocean depths.

His righteousness stands like mighty mountains: solid, massive, mighty, enduring, immovable. His justice lies vast and deep as the oceans. His judgments are as full of wisdom as the oceans are with water. When we are tempted to questions his judgments, this psalm reminds us that God makes no mistakes even though we don’t always see the wisdom behind them.

3. GRACE AVAILABLE (v.7-9)

7 How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.
You feed them from the abundance of your own house,
letting them drink from your river of delights.
For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.

The Psalmist returns in his thoughts to how precious is the love of God. Here we see the Lord as our refuge, food, drink, life, and light. We need not fear evil people because we know God loves us, judges evil and will care for us through eternity!
