Is Anyone Truly Safe?

The Psalms are an expression of songs and prayers expressing the heart and soul of humanity. The whole range of human experience is expressed from the confession of sins, expression of doubts and fears, asking God for help in times of trouble, to the praise and worship of Almighty God.

David wrote this Psalm when he was forced to escape from the city of Jerusalem where he was reigning as king. His son, Absalom, led a rebellion against him leading a group of men to revolt and set him up as king instead. King David is on the run, fleeing for his life from His own son. Talk about hurtful, personal attack!

O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, 3 for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings!

Interlude

For you have heard my vows, O God. You have given me an inheritance reserved for those who fear your name. Add many years to the life of the king! May his years span the generations! May he reign under God’s protection forever. May your unfailing love and faithfulness watch over him. Then I will sing praises to your name forever as I fulfill my vows each day.

—Psalm 61 (NLT)

In this psalm, David is crying out to God in prayer for security and assurance. He feels completely overwhelmed by the circumstances of his life. It leads him to cry out to God for help asking the Lord to be his protect and secure him. He draws on the character of God… his unfailing love and faithfulness. It causes him to offer praise and worship to God in the midst of the challenges of his life.

Like David, our world craves some form or security in this very insecure and dangerous world. We long for assurance that things will be okay today and in the future. The reality is that our only and ultimate assurance is found in Jesus Christ and our relationship with God. Wherever we are, we can trust that God will be there to answer our cries for help and that our lives and times are ultimately in His hands.

When your heart is overwhelmed, cry out to God. Allow Him to lead you to Himself, your only source of true safety and security.
