Decisions or Disciples?

What an incredible day of celebration as we witnessed many people being water baptized at PPT!

It was their public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ, as their Saviour. We heard such fascinating life stories of how God made Himself real to each one of them. I never tire of hearing how creative God is in drawing people to Himself!

This is the call of God upon our lives… to believe in Jesus and receive Him as our personal Saviour (John 1:12). Water Baptism is that public confession we give of our decision to turn from our sin and receive His forgiveness. As we baptized people, we ‘buried’ them under the water, symbolizing dying to their old way of life. Then we raised out of the water to newness of life in Christ.

The call of God though is not to just make a DECISION to receive Jesus Christ as our Saviour; it is to also become fully-devoted followers of Christ—a DISCIPLE. In our One-Year Bible reading this week, we read this verse:

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. And you must always obey the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.

Deuteronomy 10:12-13

God’s desire as expressed in these verses is for us all to fear the Lord… meaning to revere Him as God and live in a way that pleases Him. Jesus has come to not just be our Saviour—saving us from hell to live in heaven with Him for all eternity—but also LORD of our lives. To be a disciple means loving and serving Him with all of our hearts. By reading and studying His Word, which we are doing together this year, He tells us how to live a life that pleases God. All of God’s commands and decrees have been written with only one motivation in mind… to protect and provide for us. To protect us from what would harm us and provide the best possible life for us. God, our Creator, made us and only He knows what is best for us. His instructions are always and only for our own good. They provide the most blessed life possible and the greatest witness to the world around us of the love, power and goodness of God!

So, my prayer for those just water baptized, and for all of us, is to understand God’s goal for us; to not just make a decision to receive Christ as our Saviour, but rather to become a DISCIPLE of Jesus. God is not looking for us to be a ‘fan’ of Jesus, like you might be for a baseball or hockey team, but rather He desires us to be fully-devoted FOLLOWERS of Christ. Will you love Jesus and serve Him with all your heart and soul? Let’s make that choice today and every day!
