A Spiritual Companion
The value of a spiritual companion in our journey in life can never be overstated. Before Jesus ascended back to heaven, He promised He would not leave us alone but rather His departure would be beneficial to us because He would then send us another Helper, Comforter, Counselor and Advocate. That constant spiritual companion would be the person of the Holy Spirit.
The companionship of the Holy Spirit is invaluable for a Christian’s spiritual journey. When we became followers of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to live with us and provides us with guidance, comfort, strength, and wisdom. One of His primary roles is to guide us into all truth and teach us the ways of God. As we read and study the Bible, the Holy Spirit illuminates its meaning and helps us to apply it teachings to our lives. The Holy Spirit also convicts us of sin, helps us to repent and turn away from sinful ways, and enables us to live in a way that is pleasing to God.
The precious Holy Spirit also provides comfort and encouragement in times of trial and difficulty. He is the source of peace, joy and hope, and can help us persevere through even the most challenging circumstances. The Holy Spirit is also a source of strength and power, empowering us to overcome temptation, resist evil and live in a way that honours God.
Moreover, the Holy Spirit is a personal and intimate companion who walks us through every aspect of our lives. He is always present, always available, and always ready to guide and support us in every situation. Through the Holy Spirit, we can experience a deep and abiding sense of love, grace, and fellowship with God.
On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came as Jesus had promised and filled the new believers with the evidence of them speaking in other tongues. As we come to celebrate Pentecost Sunday on May 28, let's pray that the full power and presence of the Holy Spirit will fill us and flow through us as a witness to the world around us convincing them of the reality of the kingdom of God.
Scriptures
Matthew 27:50-54 (NKJV)
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happenJohn 14:16-17 (NKJV)
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
John 15:26-27 (NKJV)
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
John 16:7-11 (NKJV)
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
John 16:13-15 (NKJV)
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
