Day 3 – Jehovah, Stir Up My Faith By Your Word

Read: Joshua 3:3,5,8; 2 Chronicles 20:14-22; Hebrews 11:6

Devotional

‘… For tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.'

It was the spoken promise of God to His people. God has a plan. After wandering for 40 years in the wilderness, a new generation is ready to enter Canaan, the Promised Land. The challenge of crossing of the Jordan River is that next step in fulfilling that plan. God revealed to Joshua the strategy and once again, God prepares both Joshua and the nation by teaching them the importance of courageous and consistent faith.

LOOKING AT GOD’S PAST FAITHFULNESS
Joshua and Caleb were the only two spies of the twelve, who 40 years earlier believed God’s promise to help them defeat the occupiers and possess the Promised Land. Though the nation of Israel joined the other twelve spies in their unbelief and disobedience, these two continued to believe God and His promises, knowing somehow and someway, God would fulfill His promise. Joshua demonstrated his faith in God as he took up the challenge to lead the nation. Like Joshua, we too, need faith to begin and continue living the Christian life and journey.

While wandering in the wilderness some forty years, the Israelites had to trust God daily to save and guide them. By noticing how God fulfilled these promises to them in the past, they developed strong confidence that He would be faithful in the future and particularly in this moment, to cross the Jordan River. One of the keys to developing a strong, courageous and consistent faith is to reflect on how God has fulfilled His promises in the past.

BELIEVING GOD’S WORD NOW
So the next day, the Lord did a great wonder. The Israelite nation, consisting of some two million people then miraculously crossed the Jordan River to begin the long-awaited conquest of the Promised Land! God and spoken to Joshua and Joshua spoke to the people what God had said and promised: ‘For tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you’. All they needed to do, which they had failed to do 40 years earlier, was simply believe what God has said and step out in faith and obedience. Like Joshua and nation of Israel, we need courageous faith to continue to live this life in Christ, listening to His voice and follow His directions.

There is another example of this in 2 Chronicles 20:14-22:

"Early the next morning the army of Judah went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. On the way Jehoshaphat stopped and said, “Listen to me, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be able to stand firm. Believe in his prophets, and you will succeed."

Once again God’s people saw the Lord perform another miracle as the enemy attacked and destroyed each other. The key was to believe in Lord and what He had said through His prophets.

Hebrews 11:6 says, "And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him."

SEEING GOD’S MIRACLES TOMORROW
Today, lets please God by exercising our confidence in the Word He has spoken and the promises He has made. As you read his Word and pray into it today, let it stir up faith within in your spirit, believing that‘tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you’

Day 2 – I Will Purify Myself For The Lord

Read: Joshua 3:5, Psalm 12:6, Titus 2:11-14

Devotional

We have heard the following scripture quoted many times “You are not your own.” (1 Cor. 6:19) What does that phrase mean for us during these days of fasting and prayer? Knowing that we are not our own, how can we practically live our lives to please the One who gave everything to buy us back from a life of destruction?

In Joshua 3:5, Joshua told the people to “Purify themselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.” The word sanctify as some versions use, comes from the Hebrew word Qabash meaning to be, to make, pronounce, or observe clean. The word purify as other versions use, means to make pure by removing impurities, being free from guilt or sin and being free from corrupting elements.

Our focus for today is purifying ourselves for the Lord. The word of the Lord tells us that we are not our own. We have been bought with a very expensive price – the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Therefore, in response to the great love of God, and the wonderful salvation provided by that great love, let us take the time to purify ourselves from all impurities.

Like the Children of Israel, in Joshua chapter 3, the Lord wants us to boldly go where we have never gone before. He wants us to move into all that He has for us with confidence and boldness. However, it hard to move with confidence and boldness being weighed down by various sins. Picture a marathon runner trying to run a race wearing scuba gear, not only would it look ridiculous! It would totally slow the person down and hinder his/her race! Likewise, the Lord is calling each of us to lay aside, to strip off all those things that hinder us from taking new ground.

God wants to do great things among His people. Therefore, purification is a must in order for Him to do all that He wants to do in us, and take us to places we have never been before. Psalms 12:6 tells us that “God’s promises are pure...like silver refined in the fire 7 times over.” That means when God promises something, you can take that to the bank! There is no such thing as non-sufficient funds from God’s promissory notes. Therefore, we can trust God to do His part. His part is His presence with us.

The Ark in Joshua 3 represented the presence of God with the Children of Israel. God’s very presence was with them. He did not fail to lead them into the wonders that He had for them and demonstrated to them. God has great wonders that He wants to lead us into. Our part is to purify ourselves, to turn from evil and live a life devoted to Him because of all that He has done for us.

We are not our own. He gave His life to free us from every sin, to make us His own people – people who are totally committed to living right in order to please Him.

Let this day be a day where we commit to lay aside every weight that keeps us back, that we go to Him and trust His promises, and believe and walk with Him into all the new ground that He has for us.

Be Blessed,

Pastor Wayne Russell

Day 1 – I Will Leave The Past Behind

Read: Joshua 3:1; 2 Kings 5:9-14, Isaiah 43:18-20

Devotional

I will leave the past behind. Did you read that out loud? Okay please reread this out loud. I WILL LEAVE THE PAST BEHIND. There, it’s different when you say it out loud, isn’t it. It feels like you’ve made a decision right? Well that’s exactly what we want you to do today. Purpose to not only say it, but do it. Leave the past in the past particularly if there has been a lot negativity. It’s not easy to do. You don’t wake up one morning, say this affirmation and automatically your memory is swiped clean. That’s in the movies. This is real life. However, declaring this out loud is the beginning.

Proverbs (18 verse 21) tells us that life and death is in the power of the tongue. We choose life. So when you say it out loud you set something in motion. Now this may sound contradictory but you may at times reflect on the past, It’s ok, learn the lessons you need to learn from past experiences. Then like a relay runner grab the baton labeled future and run like someone’s chasing you – but don’t look back. Grab it, focus and run!

I remember running 4x4 relay in track and field as the 4th runner. The fourth runner brings the team to the finished line. Have you ever seen the runner of a track team look back? If the team is lagging behind someone how the 4th runner has to bring the team to the place where they can win. If I turned to look back, for any reason at all - to find out where I was with the other runners, I risked my competitors to use that split second to pick up speed and race past me. I couldn’t afford it! Yes, we were a team and everyone had their role to play but as 4th runner I had to focus on that finish line. Try running and turning your head backwards, see what happens. You slow down. You are distracted and while you are looking back someone is running past you.

Naaman had a preconceived mindset of how he thought God was to carry out his healing. Until Naaman decided to leave his mindset at the chariot and step out in faith obeying the messengers’ orders he was stuck. When he agreed, obeyed and stepped into the dirty, ugly water, that was not what he liked, desired or expected that’s when he was healed. It wasn’t the way he wanted it. He did not want to stay in his disease. Moving forward meant he had to give up something; his will.

Through Isaiah God reminds the people of His character, who He is and what He has done in the past. He’s done great things. Yet He goes on to tell them in Isaiah 43:18:

“But forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do."

Get excited! God is not stuck to the past. He is a forward moving God. He is so relevant! He wants us to look forward to what He wants to do. God was constantly getting His people to look up and look ahead. God is constantly getting His people to look up and look ahead. When you are constantly looking back you are not operating in faith. When you are constantly looking back you are distracted. So look forward. Leave the past behind. Come on, say it again: I will leave the past behind.

Let’s move forward.
