Day 7 – Jehovah, we need Your presence in healing!

Read: Joshua 3:3,6,11; Exodus 33:12-15

Devotional

Adam and Eve lived in it before the Fall. Moses asked to see it. People who love God desire to experience it. What is it? It’s the glorious presence of God. A close and personal encounter with the Lord. The Bible speaks of the omnipresence of God, meaning ‘God is everywhere’. But there is another dimension of His presence, known as the ‘manifest presence of God’, where we sense and declare, ‘God is here’. In Hebrew, the most common word for ‘presence’ is ‘panim’ which is translated ‘face’, implying a close and personal, face-to- face encounter with the Lord. That’s the cry of our hearts; O God we want to ‘see’ you, to experience you; a close, intimate encounter with the Jehovah God!

As God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt and into the Promised Land, Moses was adamant regarding his concern about who was going to go with them to show them the way. The Lord answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” In the Old Testament, the Ark of the Covenant was the symbol of God’s presence, as God declared He would dwell between the cherubim (angels) above the Ark. Now Joshua stands at the Jordan River with that same Ark and the promise of God renewed that His presence would lead the way!

The cry of Moses’ heart once he understood God’s presence would go with them was, “Please, show me Your glory.” What is God’s glory? It is His character, His nature, His way of relating to His creatures. The glory of God is the manifest presence of God. Where God comes in such a way that is presence is tangible. You just know He is there in the room, by His Spirit. At last Wednesday night’s Worship & Prayer Service, we experienced it and His presence grew stronger and more powerful as we sang a song about miracles! The manifest presence of God brings the provision of God. Today, we are believing for miracles, healings, signs and wonders to be performed as we welcome the presence of God in our services this morning and evening: Lord, Take Us Where We’ve Never Been Before In Your Word and Break Every Chain!

Day 6 – In Jesus' name, we will cross the Jordan

Read: Joshua 3:16b,17; 2 Kings 2:6-14

Devotional

Joshua led the Children of Israel to the Jordan River. The Promised Land was in sight. Four hundred years of slavery and forty years of Wilderness wandering have brought them to the edge of their destiny. This was what they have been waiting for.

There are three things in play in our text: on one side of the ledger, we have the Wilderness, on the other side we have the Promised Land and in the middle we have the Jordan River, a physical obstacle, preventing their progress.

The Wilderness

Each one of us could tell a story of life in the Wilderness. Simply put, it’s a place where life is just difficult. It’s a struggle to make it through the day. In the Wilderness we walk and walk and walk and get nowhere. No matter what we do progress eludes us. We feel lost, confused, and at times we are not sure which way to go or what to do.

The Wilderness represents a place of deep sorrow and tears; a place of loneliness, a place of fear, and a place of unhappiness.

The Promised Land

We all have some idea of what the Promised Land is or what it will be like. It represents our destiny. This is where we want to be. It points to a better future; it’s a place of Joy; it’s a place of fulfilled life, a life of meaning and rest; it’s a place of security and predictability. We feel safe!

If the Wilderness is about survival then the Promised Land holds before us the image of living, really living in God`s presence.

The Obstacle

There is a very important principle/pattern in life: there are battles before victory and there are struggles before celebration.

The Jordan River was the boundary between the Wilderness and the Promised Land. It was the obstacle standing between the people of God and their Promised Land.

The Bible tells us that they spent three days at the River Jordan; with each passing day, the mighty current eroded their confidence. The cry from deep within, we will never make it!

It’s easy for us to relate to the emotions and thoughts of the Children of Israel. So many of us face our own Personal Jordan’s that feel permanent and powerful that we don’t even try to make it across. Our lives feel stalled, stuck on the wrong side of Gods purposes and promises. We read about the abundant life, but can`t make it out of the Wilderness.

We would want to escape the Wilderness. If we could have our way we would want God to pluck us out of our Wilderness and set us down in the Promised Land. That’s not how it works. God does not rescue or save us from the circumstances of our lives.

For every Wilderness there is a Promised Land and for every Promised Land there is a River Jordan that must be crossed.

Cross-over

In our narrative from chapter 1 to chapter 3, this word Cross-over was used approximately 21 times; it represents a place of transition, moving from the Wilderness to the Promised Land. Elisha had come to that place of transition in his life. He had followed Elijah for some time but now Elijah was gone and the Jordan River stood before him and his destiny; he had to Cross-over Jordan and into what God had waiting for him.

Like Israel, we stand at the edge of our personal Jordan River. The only way into the Promised Land is through the raging flood water of life. How deep is it? How solid is the bottom? Is it slippery? How strong is the current? How far across is the river?  What will I find on the other side? All good questions.

In some way those are the questions of life, the questions that arise every time we make a move whether physically, emotionally or spiritually. They are not questions that get answered before we step into our personal Jordan.

Ultimately, it is God not the answers that takes us across our Jordan.

Step in and get your feet wet

God, however, did not hold back the water for the Children of Israel before they put their feet in. It is only after they stepped into the water that God acted, and provided a miracle. God can only work with what we give Him. Standing on the bank waiting for answers, waiting for better time and place, or waiting for the flood to subside offers God nothing to work with.

One step was all it took. With the one step God acted, the flowing water stood still, there was dry land and the people crossed over. With that one step they followed the Ark of God`s presence into the Jordan and across.

What is the first step that we must take? Maybe that first step is obedience, maybe its offering someone forgiveness and reconciliation. Maybe your life is unmanageable and the first step is one of twelve, maybe that first step is to be quiet, be still, and listen. Perhaps it’s letting go of being in control of your life and trusting God.

God knows the first step to be taken. I do not know when and how you will cross your Jordan but I know it happens one step at a time and that first step always takes us to a new land, to a new way of being, and to new life, God`s life.

Step out in faith, follow the Ark of the Covenant of God`s presence and Cross- over your Jordan.

Day 5 – Lord, Drive Out The Enemy

Read: Joshua 3:10,14,15; Isaiah 41:10-20

Devotional

We call on the Lord to drive out the enemy, just as Joshua declared to the people in Joshua 3:10; “And Joshua said, hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites , … and the Jebusites.” We must trust that the Lord will surely do it and the enemy knows we cannot lose with the Lord on our side.

Therefore, the enemy feels threatened and whenever the enemy is threatened, he will attack by fighting us. Satan will not waste time to attack you if you are not engaged in any spiritual exercises. However, any time you are obediently moving with the Lord, fasting and praying or waiting on the Lord, the enemy will attack you because you are a threat. The good thing is our enemy is not all knowing, he is not creative and we are not ignorant of his devices. He will use fear, oppression and any destructive force available to try to shut down those things that bring glory and honor to God.

As we journey with the Lord, to where we have never been before, we must not allow the enemy to keep us down because we have nothing to fear. The enemy cannot destroy us and the enemy cannot take us from God. We are made perfect through Jesus Christ and we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus who loves us.

As we journey with the Lord, to where we have never been before, we must take God at His word and believe that God would keep His promise to cut off our Jordan River once we get our feet wet by stepping out into the river. Joshua said that Israel could know for certain that God would give them the land of Canaan when they saw Him miraculously stop the Jordan River. But they still had to step out in faith. God is calling us to walk by faith and not by sight.

As we journey with the Lord, to where we have never been before, we must be strong and courageous; not be afraid or terrified because of the enemy, because the LORD our God will go with us and will never leave us nor forsake us. The Lord will not only part the Jordan river, we shall surely walk on dry ground, that is our God’s specialty.

As we journey with the Lord, to where we have never been before, we must remember that God works powerfully when His people take Him at His word and step out in faith. Be encouraged, for with God nothing shall be impossible, so as we fast and pray, may we see God do great and mighty things. Amen!

Day 4 – Your promises are Yes and Amen

Read: Joshua 3:5,13,15,16; Jeremiah 1:12; 2 Corinthians 1:20

Devotional

“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” Joshua 3:5

Amazing things....yes, we all want them.

As we enter into another year, we reflect upon a year that brought us much joy, laughter, challenges and difficulties through the year. We look to 2019, with anticipation and hope for an amazing year. Going deeper in God, seeing miracles and salvations, watching His handiwork in our lives, in our families, our church, our circumstances. Yes Lord... we want exactly what you promised in your Word.

The Israelites wanted what God promised them years before. They wanted the Promise Land and all that it held. But how? This wasn’t a life raft or boat. How do they get to the promise that God had for them? How did they know what would happen if they stepped into the Jordan at flood stage. Flood stage was not just inconvenient but covering areas not normally covered by water and possibly life threatening. What did they need to do? Follow the Ark of the covenant?! What was so important about this piece of furniture? Why did it need to go first? How do they get to the promise?

The clue was inside. The stone tablets that had the writings of the finger of God to the Israelites was a clear sign of His desire to have relationship with the Israelites. The pot of Manna was a reminder that God would provide for them wherever he would lead them. The other piece was the dead stick, Aaron’s rod. Yes I did say dead stick! And yet this stick grew leaves and almonds to remind them that God has the power to perform anything he wants with whatever he wants to accomplish in his will. The Ark of the covenant was a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the gold plated mercy seat on top, was the Old Testament reminder of God with us. When the Ark of the Covenant went in front of them, God walked before them. He was stepping into the Jordan and the water piled up into a heap. When you see the Ark of the covenant, you see the Great I Am before you.

Remember that just like the Israelites, He is walking before you. What amazing things are you trusting God for? Jeremiah 1:12 reminds us that “He is looking to accomplish His Word in your life." God loves us and desires a close relationship with us, He will provide for us in every situation with limitless power. His promises are yes and amen... there are no obstacles with God, only opportunities to show His power and love for His people. Walk into the unknown and watch obstacles pile up. He’s already there with amazing things for those who will dare to trust Him at His Word.

Blessings,

Pastor Kimberley Oldford

Day 3 – Jehovah, Stir Up My Faith By Your Word

Read: Joshua 3:3,5,8; 2 Chronicles 20:14-22; Hebrews 11:6

Devotional

‘… For tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.'

It was the spoken promise of God to His people. God has a plan. After wandering for 40 years in the wilderness, a new generation is ready to enter Canaan, the Promised Land. The challenge of crossing of the Jordan River is that next step in fulfilling that plan. God revealed to Joshua the strategy and once again, God prepares both Joshua and the nation by teaching them the importance of courageous and consistent faith.

LOOKING AT GOD’S PAST FAITHFULNESS
Joshua and Caleb were the only two spies of the twelve, who 40 years earlier believed God’s promise to help them defeat the occupiers and possess the Promised Land. Though the nation of Israel joined the other twelve spies in their unbelief and disobedience, these two continued to believe God and His promises, knowing somehow and someway, God would fulfill His promise. Joshua demonstrated his faith in God as he took up the challenge to lead the nation. Like Joshua, we too, need faith to begin and continue living the Christian life and journey.

While wandering in the wilderness some forty years, the Israelites had to trust God daily to save and guide them. By noticing how God fulfilled these promises to them in the past, they developed strong confidence that He would be faithful in the future and particularly in this moment, to cross the Jordan River. One of the keys to developing a strong, courageous and consistent faith is to reflect on how God has fulfilled His promises in the past.

BELIEVING GOD’S WORD NOW
So the next day, the Lord did a great wonder. The Israelite nation, consisting of some two million people then miraculously crossed the Jordan River to begin the long-awaited conquest of the Promised Land! God and spoken to Joshua and Joshua spoke to the people what God had said and promised: ‘For tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you’. All they needed to do, which they had failed to do 40 years earlier, was simply believe what God has said and step out in faith and obedience. Like Joshua and nation of Israel, we need courageous faith to continue to live this life in Christ, listening to His voice and follow His directions.

There is another example of this in 2 Chronicles 20:14-22:

"Early the next morning the army of Judah went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. On the way Jehoshaphat stopped and said, “Listen to me, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be able to stand firm. Believe in his prophets, and you will succeed."

Once again God’s people saw the Lord perform another miracle as the enemy attacked and destroyed each other. The key was to believe in Lord and what He had said through His prophets.

Hebrews 11:6 says, "And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him."

SEEING GOD’S MIRACLES TOMORROW
Today, lets please God by exercising our confidence in the Word He has spoken and the promises He has made. As you read his Word and pray into it today, let it stir up faith within in your spirit, believing that‘tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you’

Day 2 – I Will Purify Myself For The Lord

Read: Joshua 3:5, Psalm 12:6, Titus 2:11-14

Devotional

We have heard the following scripture quoted many times “You are not your own.” (1 Cor. 6:19) What does that phrase mean for us during these days of fasting and prayer? Knowing that we are not our own, how can we practically live our lives to please the One who gave everything to buy us back from a life of destruction?

In Joshua 3:5, Joshua told the people to “Purify themselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.” The word sanctify as some versions use, comes from the Hebrew word Qabash meaning to be, to make, pronounce, or observe clean. The word purify as other versions use, means to make pure by removing impurities, being free from guilt or sin and being free from corrupting elements.

Our focus for today is purifying ourselves for the Lord. The word of the Lord tells us that we are not our own. We have been bought with a very expensive price – the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Therefore, in response to the great love of God, and the wonderful salvation provided by that great love, let us take the time to purify ourselves from all impurities.

Like the Children of Israel, in Joshua chapter 3, the Lord wants us to boldly go where we have never gone before. He wants us to move into all that He has for us with confidence and boldness. However, it hard to move with confidence and boldness being weighed down by various sins. Picture a marathon runner trying to run a race wearing scuba gear, not only would it look ridiculous! It would totally slow the person down and hinder his/her race! Likewise, the Lord is calling each of us to lay aside, to strip off all those things that hinder us from taking new ground.

God wants to do great things among His people. Therefore, purification is a must in order for Him to do all that He wants to do in us, and take us to places we have never been before. Psalms 12:6 tells us that “God’s promises are pure...like silver refined in the fire 7 times over.” That means when God promises something, you can take that to the bank! There is no such thing as non-sufficient funds from God’s promissory notes. Therefore, we can trust God to do His part. His part is His presence with us.

The Ark in Joshua 3 represented the presence of God with the Children of Israel. God’s very presence was with them. He did not fail to lead them into the wonders that He had for them and demonstrated to them. God has great wonders that He wants to lead us into. Our part is to purify ourselves, to turn from evil and live a life devoted to Him because of all that He has done for us.

We are not our own. He gave His life to free us from every sin, to make us His own people – people who are totally committed to living right in order to please Him.

Let this day be a day where we commit to lay aside every weight that keeps us back, that we go to Him and trust His promises, and believe and walk with Him into all the new ground that He has for us.

Be Blessed,

Pastor Wayne Russell

Leave the past in the past particularly if there has been a lot negativity. It’s not easy to do. You don’t wake up one morning, say this affirmation and automatically your memory is swiped clean. That’s in the movies. This is real life. However, declaring this out loud is the beginning.

Proverbs (18 verse 21) tells us that life and death is in the power of the tongue. We choose life. So when you say it out loud you set something in motion. Now this may sound contradictory but you may at times reflect on the past, It’s ok, learn the lessons you need to learn from past experiences. Then like a relay runner grab the baton labeled future and run like someone’s chasing you – but don’t look back. Grab it, focus and run!

I remember running 4x4 relay in track and field as the 4th runner. The fourth runner brings the team to the finished line. Have you ever seen the runner of a track team look back? If the team is lagging behind someone how the 4th runner has to bring the team to the place where they can win. If I turned to look back, for any reason at all - to find out where I was with the other runners, I risked my competitors to use that split second to pick up speed and race past me. I couldn’t afford it! Yes, we were a team and everyone had their role to play but as 4th runner I had to focus on that finish line. Try running and turning your head backwards, see what happens. You slow down. You are distracted and while you are looking back someone is running past you.

Naaman had a preconceived mindset of how he thought God was to carry out his healing. Until Naaman decided to leave his mindset at the chariot and step out in faith obeying the messengers’ orders he was stuck. When he agreed, obeyed and stepped into the dirty, ugly water, that was not what he liked, desired or expected that’s when he was healed. It wasn’t the way he wanted it. He did not want to stay in his disease. Moving forward meant he had to give up something; his will.

Through Isaiah God reminds the people of His character, who He is and what He has done in the past. He’s done great things. Yet He goes on to tell them in Isaiah 43:18:

“But forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do."

Get excited! God is not stuck to the past. He is a forward moving God. He is so relevant! He wants us to look forward to what He wants to do. God was constantly getting His people to look up and look ahead. God is constantly getting His people to look up and look ahead. When you are constantly looking back you are not operating in faith. When you are constantly looking back you are distracted. So look forward. Leave the past behind. Come on, say it again: I will leave the past behind.

Let’s move forward.
