When Faith and Culture Collide

There are seven key principles that govern the kingdom of God. As we practice these principles we reflect God and His kingdom to the world around us. We will also find that these kingdom principles will collide with the culture of our world and our own carnal nature. But remember these are the principles that are to govern our lives here and now and in the age to come.

The principle of love reflects God’s unconditional love. Through love for God, our neighbour and other believers, we focus on loving, serving and blessing others and defeat the culture of selfishness. (Matthew 22:37-40)

The principle of mercy reflects God’s abundant mercy. Through being compassionate and forgiving we reflect God’s mercy to others. This often collides with the culture of unforgiveness and holding on to past hurt and offences. (Micah 6:8)

The principle of giving reflects God's grace. Through generous giving of ourselves and of our resources we defeat the culture of selfishness. (2 Corinthians 8:7)

The principle of faith reflects God as faithful and true. Through our faith in God and His Word we demonstrate that we are living in a relationship of trust in God.
We defeat the culture of focusing on own reasoning, feelings and circumstances, rather than on faith in the Word. (Hebrews 11:1)

The principle of authority reflects God as Lord of our lives. Through our submission to God’s authority, His Word and by honoring leaders, we defeat the culture of independent, disobedient and even rebellious attitudes. (Ephesians 1:22)

The principle of power reflects God as Almighty. Through our dependence on the Holy Spirit we obey the Lord and reveal His power. This defeats the culture of depending on ourselves and our natural ability rather than on the anointing. (Acts 1:8)

The principle of unity reflects God as One: The Father, The Son & The Holy Spirit. Through the unity of our relationship with God in prayer and worship and with others in the Body of Christ, the kingdom of God impacts the world. This defeats the culture of division which seeks to weaken the witness of the church and its ability to impact the world with the gospel. (John 17:23)

God’s light shines out of our individual lives as believers and also the corporate body of the church when these principles are expressed through our lives. The light shines into the spiritual darkness of the world, enabling the Kingdom to advance and the devil’s dominion of darkness to retreat.

By living by the principles of the kingdom of God, we as believers are able to live at peace with God, with others and with ourselves. There is a joy that fills our hearts and radiates from our lives. Living by these principles gives glory to God because of the fruit that it produces.

So let’s be thankful for the gift of God’s Kingdom and for the gift of the Holy Spirit who enables us to live by these principles of the Kingdom, and so express the life of Jesus in and through our lives!
