Read: 2 Corinthians 3:18, Exodus 33:19-23; 34:29-35
Lord, let me reflect your glory! What an amazing prospect – that as imperfect human beings we can be used to reflect the glory of God!
The word glory in the context of these scriptures generally means the magnificence, splendor and sublime beauty of God. We can also use this word to describe the goodness of God – His wonderful nature and character. God is a good God. He is majestic. He is awesome. His splendor fills the entire universe. Therefore, a question that arises is how can we as mere human beings reflect such a wonderful characteristic as the glory of God?
The key answer comes from the word reflect. The moon does not have the power and majesty of the sun. However, it reflects to some degree the brightness of the sun. In Exodus 33:18 Moses asked the Lord to show him His glory. Later on in in Exodus 34:29 we saw that Moses’s face shone after he spent time in the presence of the Lord talking to Him. Moses’s face shone as a result of being with the Lord! In other words, to some degree Moses was reflecting the brilliance of God. Now, there is no way that Moses could reflect the entirety of who God is! Moses is finite. But, God is infinite and all powerful. Yet, the fact remains that Moses’s face shone after coming down from Mount Sinai from the presence of God. The glory of God shone on his face so much that people reacted to it! People were afraid to come near to Moses because of the glory of the Lord shining on his face. (Ex. 34:30) Therefore, Moses wore a veil to shield the people from the “after glow” of being in God’s presence.
In 2 Corinthians 3:18 the scripture states that “all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect that glory of the Lord.” I believe the Lord is calling us to pursue Him, to run after Him, and to spend time with Him. Something wonderful happens as we do this. We start to become more like Him, we start to reflect His goodness, character and nature to the chaotic world around us. And unlike Moses, God is calling us as believers to have “unveiled” faces for the world to see His glory shining through us. God wants us to reflect His transforming power in our lives. He wants us to testify of His goodness, His ability to make old things new, His provision, His hope, His mercy, and His love. Let us not hide it! – Let this little light shine to the glory of God.
Moses asked “Lord show me your glory.” I pray that we would sincerely ask the Lord to allow us to reflect His glory. I believe that as we continue to ask and continue to spend time in His presence that like Moses, we would begin to shine forth the glory of God in many situations without even being aware of it. (Ex. 34:29)
May God use us to reflect His glory in 2020 and through the new decade.
God bless you,
Pastor Wayne Russell
